The Kerala Story Hit Or Flop : Worldwide Box Office Collection And Budget

The Kerala Story Hit Or Flop : Talking about  film 'The Kerala Story', its initial performance at the box office has been very Good . For this film to be a Hit, it will have to do minium business of 55 crores in Theatres.

The Kerala Story Hit Or Flop : Amidst the ongoing controversies, director Sudipto Sen's 'The Kerala Story' hit the theaters on Friday, May 5. Due to controversies, the makers had to make changes in the trailer of the film as well. If seen like this, making a film based on true incidents has always attracted filmmakers, but when the maker brings a true incident to the screen, then his responsibility increases. Cinematic liberties can be taken in fictional stories, but in a film based on true events, even the smallest illogical point gets stuck and as a result reduces its effect. The film revolves around the alleged conversion and radicalization of young Hindu girls to Islam in Kerala. The film claims to be based on the true stories of three young girls from Kerala.

Story of 'The Kerala Story' :
The story begins with Fathima aka Shalini Unnikrishnan (Adah Sharma) surrounded by investigating officers, narrating her horrific and painful past, saying, 'To know when I joined ISIS, it is necessary to know that How and why did you join? The back story then begins, where four girl students take admission in a nursing school in Kasargod, Kerala, with Shalini sharing a room with her roommates Geetanjali (Siddhi Idnani), Nimah (Yogita Bihani) and Asifa (Sonia Balani). become close friends. Shalini, Gitanjali and Nimah are completely unaware of Asifa's sinister intentions.
Actually Asifa has a hidden agenda to convert her roommates to Islam by taking them away from their family and religion. For this, she takes the support of her two fake brothers and lays such a trap that the girls become radicalized. They are given drugs to brainwash them, hatred towards family and distrust of religion is instilled. Not only this, Rameez, who traps Shalini in his love trap, makes her pregnant. Due to the fear of the society, Shalini accepts Islam, marries an unknown man and leaves India and escapes to Syria via Pakistan and Afghanistan. The journey ahead proves to be even more terrifying for Shalini, here in India, both her friends Geetanjali and Nimah also have to go through hell.

The Kerala Story Review :
Sudipto Sen as a director has managed to create fear and unease through his characters.  But his characters are completely black and white.  There is no scope for gray characters in his story.  Brainwashing the youth and drowning them in the pit of terrorism is a very serious issue, but its projection in the film seems misguided.  The process of brainwashing the girls in the film looks very childish.  The way Asifa and her accomplices trick the graduating girls, they do not find convincing.  There are many scenes like Geetanjali spitting on her father lying in the hospital, Shalini going to Syria despite knowing the truth in Colombo.

The violent and rape scenes in the film may give chills to the weak hearted.  There are also many such dialogues, which can hurt the sentiments of people of different communities and ideologies.  The editing of the film could have been a bit tighter.  However, in the cinematography of Prashantanu Mohapatra, the world from Kerala to Afghanistan has been shown very well.

In terms of acting, Adah Sharma portrays her innocence in the form of Shalini on the one hand and fear, helplessness, anger and pain in the form of Fatima on the other hand.  Adah's work in the film is commendable.  As friends, Yogita Bihani and Siddhi Idnani have also done justice to their roles, but their characters lack depth.  Supporting cast is fine.

  • Adah Sharma as Shalini Unnikrishnan / Fatima Ba
